Cathy Thomas is a recent Ph.D. graduate in Plant and Crop science from the University of Nottingham, and has an M.Sc. in Ecology and the Environment from Lancaster University. Her interests are in soil science, plant-soil interactions particularly relating to nutrient acquisition, and sustainable agriculture.
Cathy is currently working as the GeoPhenomics research scientist in the new AfSIS (Africa Soil Information Service) laboratory based at Rothamsted. Using Innovative dry spectroscopic analyses of soil and plant materials the project will undertake high throughput screening of plant material (leaf and grain) grown on a range of different soils, with different fertiliser treatments. The aim is to better understand the interactions between soil characteristics, fertiliser uptake and crop nutrition, possibly leading to diagnostic nutrient management tools based on plant sampling.
